Steve Butler 'Clear' GUMCD47 £12.99 (inc UK delivery) For many years the voice of Glasgow trio Lies Damned Lies and Sticky co-proprietor, Edinburgh-based Steve has completed 'Clear' twenty three years after his first contrastingly-titled Sticky release 'Oblique'. Unlike LDL's sparse, sculpted sound which has evoked comparisons to Blue Nile, Talk Talk, and latterly, Low, Steve's solo work on 'Clear', and previous collection Love Come Down sits firmly in the classic singer songwriter territory of love, loss and longing explored by inspirations such as Jackson Browne, Joni Mitchell and Bruce Cockburn, capturing something of the mellow truthfulness of the 1970's (American) west coast scene at it's best. In a second project for Sticky, journalist Martin Wroe has produced a new collecton of spoken meditations read by actor Justin Butcher - SEVEN - MEDITATIONS ON THE SEVEN LAST WORDS FROM THE CROSS. Suitable for use by individuals or groups, the readings are woven together by original music for cello by composer Harry Napier.

Lots of people have been acquiring a copy of this album length collection of music composed with use by groups or individuals for meditation in mind. Inspired by five different biblical references to prayer, the music is a complex series of melodic improvisations around repeating themes. It was used extensively during Labyrinth meditations at the recent Greenbelt Festival, and is currently used as background music at the art gallery run by the artist who painted the cover image.
